HKUST Evaluation of the BIM Adoption for Civil Infrastructure and Development of a 5D BIM Financial Decision Making Framework Thesis 08/2015 Qiqi LU Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been widely adopted in the building industry. However, the application of BIM in civil infrastructure facilities, sometimes referred to Civil Information Modeling (CIM), is relatively lacking and slow. Researchers and practitioners are increasingly putting efforts into CIM study and implementation, but so far there is no comprehensive review of their efforts in this regard. Such study can help the academia and industry find the gaps and identify future research direction. Therefore, this work firstly presents a framework to evaluate the current practices of CIM adoption for various civil infrastructure facilities. In this study, civil infrastructure facilities were divided into nine categories for evaluation and the efforts with regard to CIM adoption for each infrastructure category were evaluated in six aspects. This study summarizes the results of 171 case studies and 62 academic papers on CIM. Based on the evaluation and comparison results, research gaps and future direction are identified. For example, CIM uses for detailed design and documentation phase and O&M phase like 5D cost estimation, are seldom conducted and studied.

5D BIM has been studied in academic research and implemented in industry. However, existing studies on 5D BIM focus on cash outflow estimation rather than cash inflow analysis and project financing. This thesis proposes a 5D BIM-based framework for cash flow analysis and project financing. This framework considers contract types and retainage to estimate cash inflow, and cash outflow patterns for equipment, manpower and materials to accurately estimate cash outflow. Project financing scenarios can also be evaluated using the framework. One building case and one bridge case are demonstrated to validate the proposed framework by considering various what-if scenarios. The framework can help contractors analyze the cash flow and make appropriate decisions for different design and payment scheme alternatives in various types of construction projects.

HKUST Developing a Building Information Modeling Framework for Infrastructure Facility Management FYP 06/2016 LI, Kang

Building information modeling (BIM) aims to facilitate information management and collaboration among stakeholders in different domains over the building facility life cycle. In a BIM model, each building component has its properties, information, and semantics. Modifications performed in one view will be reflected in all perspectives. BIM models are increasingly used in the building industry as an object-based information hub for storing, integrating and managing building information in different aspects throughout the design, construction, and maintenance operations. However, the applications of BIM for civil infrastructures are still immature and uncommon. This project aims to develop a BIM-based framework that facilitates the facility operation and management process of civil infrastructure facilities. In this project, the information requirement and facility management process will be studied and summarized. A semantic data model and system framework for infrastructure facility management will then be developed. The developed framework will finally be illustrated and validated in case scenarios. N.A.
HKUST A review of the efforts and roles of the public sector for BIM adoption worldwide Journal 07/2015 Cheng, J.C.P., and Lu, Q. Building Information Modeling (BIM) adoption is spreading through the public sector (including government bodies and non-profit organizations) around the globe in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. The public sector plays a key role in supporting and encouraging the adoption of BIM in the industry. Currently there is no comprehensive study on the efforts and roles of the public sector for BIM adoption. In this paper, different kinds of the efforts that the public sector has put for BIM adoption worldwide are reviewed to highlight the successful implementations of BIM and to identify the gaps in some countries. The countries covered in this paper are grouped into four regions - the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. In each region, efforts of the public sector in different countries to BIM implementations including establishment of BIM programs and committees, organization of BIM activities and seminars, setting up of different BIM goals and promises, and preparation of BIM guidelines and standards are described and compared. This paper also identifies six major possible roles of the public sector for BIM adoption. The roles played by the public sector in each selected country are summarized and evaluated. 連結
HKUST As-built BIM Model Verification Through Field Inspection and Laser Scanning: A Comparative Study Report 06/2020 HUANG, Cong

BIM model is a prerequisite for the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of sustainable buildings. Only after having a reliable BIM model can start O&M related work, such as space management and energy management, all these works needs to confirm the accuracy of the BIM model. In this project, the author conducted a verify of the BIM model to ensure that the model was correct before the O&M work started.
This project first compared various survey methods, and based on their advantages and disadvantages, chose the laser scanning method and manual survey method for experiments. Then using two selected methods to do site surveying for HUKUST parking lot and LTK to SENG Commons. And the end, given survey recommendations for different types of as-built model verification based on the survey result.

BIM is a three-dimensional digital based model or technology with various project-related information inside. It is widely used in modern building industry. As buildings are consuming so much energy today, building energy save has become an important part of a project’s optimization. To achieve the purpose of saving and controlling a building's energy consumption by BIM related software prediction and adjustment and control is a simple and effective strategy.

This project aims to make energy-saving analyzes of STUDENT HALL 7 of HKUST, the main study method is: Revit 3D model—Green Building Studio energy analysis—solar panel analysis—PVGIS analysis—ECOTECT environmental analysis. Firstly obtained the three-dimensional model of Hall 7 through REVIT, and then send the model to Autodesk Green Building Studio to make energy consumption analysis, than make solar panel analysis of the building to find the energy save of panels, afterwards use PVGIS to check if the saving ratio is rational. What’s more, we also import the REVIT into ECOTECT to make further analysis.

HKUST Social BIMCloud: A distributed cloud-based BIM platform for object-based lifecycle information exchange Journal 03/2015 Das, M., Cheng, J.C.P., and Kumar, S. Background
The architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry lacks a framework for capturing, managing, and exchanging project, product, and social information over the lifecycle of a building. The current tools have various limitations, such as lack of interoperability, slow to transfer huge building model files, and possibility of data inconsistency.

Methods
In this paper, we present a cloud-based BIM server framework namely Social BIMCloud that facilitates BIM information exchange through dynamic merging and splitting of building models. The data model of Social BIMCloud is based on but not limited to IFC. The data model of Social BIMCloud was further extended to accommodate social interactions, by studying the formal modes of communication in the AEC industry. An object-based approach to capture and manage social interactions in AEC projects through a BIM-based visual user interface was also developed and demonstrated.

Results
Social BIMCloud addresses the issues of inefficient data transfer speed and data inconsistency in a distributed environment by facilitating the storage and partial exchange of integrated nD BIM models. Data interoperability is facilitated through open BIM standards such as IFC and direct integration with construction software. High performance, scalability, fault tolerance, and cost effectiveness are facilitated through data partitioning, data replication strategies, multi-node structures, and pay-per-use tariff systems, respectively, through a cloud-based NoSQL database.

Conclusion
The Social BIMCloud framework helps to develop and exchange BIM models, which are rich in project information such as social interactions, cost, and energy analyses. This framework improves the communication efficiency between project participants, leading to better designs and less rework. The information captured by this framework could also be useful to determine important metrics such as industry trends, relationships among project participants, and user requirements.
