HKUST BIM-Based Daylighting and Energy Analysis on UG Hall 7 of HKUST Report 06/2016 Tianzhu QIN

BIM is a three-dimensional digital based model or technology with various project-related information inside. It is widely used in modern building industry. As buildings are consuming so much energy today, building energy save has become an important part of a project’s optimization. To achieve the purpose of saving and controlling a building's energy consumption by BIM related software prediction and adjustment and control is a simple and effective strategy.

This project aims to make energy-saving analyzes of STUDENT HALL 7 of HKUST, the main study method is: Revit 3D model—Green Building Studio energy analysis—solar panel analysis—PVGIS analysis—ECOTECT environmental analysis. Firstly obtained the three-dimensional model of Hall 7 through REVIT, and then send the model to Autodesk Green Building Studio to make energy consumption analysis, than make solar panel analysis of the building to find the energy save of panels, afterwards use PVGIS to check if the saving ratio is rational. What’s more, we also import the REVIT into ECOTECT to make further analysis.

HKUST Developing a BIM- and GIS-based Facility Management Framework for Underground Utilities Report 06/2017 Starry Xing LI

Nowadays there is a trend of integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information System (GIS) to develop the construction projects, including the projects of underground utilities. Compared with BIM and GIS, traditional utility management has plenty of limitations. Traditional utility management keeps 2D CAD drawings, which are separated by utility type and lack of surrounding information. Besides, it is difficult to find the specific utility pipe in 2D drawings under special situation. The working sequence arrangement for those pipes are sometimes not effective.

This study aims to improve underground utility management in Hong Kong by using ArcGIS. The improvements consist of 3D visualization, querying and working sequence arrangement. 3D visualization of underground pipes and geological layers is created with reference to relevant Hong Kong standards and researches. Three cases are described to demonstrate the practical application of querying function. Working sequence of project in case 3 is analyzed through Excel.

HKUST Developing a BIM-Based Facility Management Framework for Building Operations Report 06/2017 Zhang Zhongkuang

Indoor air quality affects human comfort in several aspects such as temperature, humidity, CO2 and CO. With BIM and sensor technologies, the real-time indoor air quality data can be collected by sensors, transmitted and displayed in the BIM model, therefore the building control system can make appropriate adjustments to improve the indoor air quality. For BIM models, the model-based approach increases efficiency within individual organizations and truly shines during coordinated project delivery. Building information modeling can drive time and budget savings for building and infrastructure projects. For sensors, the data gathered is converted to a digital form and is processed at high speed. Sensor technology can store the data in memory, from where it can be retrieved later for processing, analysis and presentation.

In this research, a plugin for grading the indoor air quality was designed, which can grade the indoor air quality at current or a specified past time as “good”, “fair” or “bad” showing in the BIM model. With the grading level, proper regulate and control could be made from the building control system to improve the indoor air quality. This designed plugin was used in a real case of seafront sport center in HKUST. Moreover, to efficiently manage sensors in a building, to reduce the energy consumption thus reduce the budget, linking facility and energy management to human comfort are also necessary and should be completed in the future work.

HKUST Incorporating Project Management Techniques in Building Information Modeling Projects Report 06/2017 Hao WU

Building information modeling (BIM), which is becoming widely adopted by the construction industry for its superior efficiency and conveniences. However, due to great differences distinguished by conventional project construction process, traditional construction system cannot be perfectly exploited in BIM projects. Therefore, developing adaptive project management techniques are significantly essential to facilitate the BIM project implementation in the future. In this study, contractual framework, project delivery approaches and information management standard are studied. Based on the existing standards and feasible delivery and information exchange methods, comparisons and suggestions are given to improve BIM project management level from both technical and legal perspectives. In addition, potential BIM related claims with case study are also explored in this paper. Refer to the content investigated, some preliminary conclusions and recommendations are given for the purpose to achieve higher BIM project quality. N.A.
HKUST Analysis and Evaluation of Indoor Ventilation and Energy Consumption Using Building Information Modeling Report 06/2017 SONG Wenyi

This project used Building Information Modeling (BIM) and BIM compatible software, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD), to analyze the indoor environmental quality of the current UG Hall VII building in HKUST under mechanical and natural ventilation. The results obtained from the software analysis were used for evaluating the indoor environment with green building standard BEAM Plus EB Ver. 2 Selective Scheme. Indoor environmental quality analysis and energy analysis on different air-conditioner usage scenarios and modified air-conditioning system were also conducted to investigate whether any modifications could give rise to the indoor environment that able to reach BEAM Plus standard while reducing energy consumption. We founded that turning on one air-conditioner in only one bedroom in a suite could achieve favourable indoor environment while reducing half of the energy usage on cooling. Also, changing the air-conditioning system from window-type air-conditioners to centralized system could also lower energy consumption on cooling while keeping a comfortable indoor environment. N.A.
HKUST Automated Clash-free Steel Reinforcement Design in RC Structures Using BIM and GA Report 06/2018 Tommy Yuen Currently, building information modelling (BIM) technology has been increasingly popular in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry for some years, but it is not widely adopted in structural design. The objective of this project is to develop a framework for automated rebar design in RC beams using the building information modelling (BIM) technology.

This project presents an automated rebar design program, based on the latest BIM technology. Design constraints for the optimization are considered according to the Hong Kong Code of Practice. The developed program will make use of the analysis result from structural software to design RC beams, and then the tailor-made genetic algorithm will optimize the final rebar design. Finally, generate the rebars to BIM model in 3D environment.

The result shows that BIM can carry out repetitive works and complicated calculations automatically and accurately. Unlike human, they seldom make mistakes through over-tiredness, do not require rest breaks and can carry out in seconds what may take hours to do by manual methods. The overall design process is fully automated, smooth and without error. Therefore, it is anticipated that the time and manpower resource required for structural design and management could be reduced significantly.
